Creating an Effective CV

Updated: Oct 19

All You Need to Know About Creating a Winning CV

Now As the new year begins, you might find yourself in need of a new job. If you've been sending out countless CVs with no response, it's possible that the issue lies in the way you've written your curriculum vitae (CV). While job hunting has evolved over the years, one thing remains relevant–the CV. Prospective employers are still interested in your academic and professional history, making it crucial to present a concise and professional document.

Here's a breakdown of what completes a CV.

Tip #1 - Personal Details

Your personal details should be prominently placed at the top of your CV as the first thing your prospective employer sees. Present this information in chronological order, starting with your full name in bold and centered at the top of the page. Follow this with your contact details, including your address, mobile number, and email address.

Tip #2 - Personal Profile Statement

The second part of your CV is a personal profile statement. This concise paragraph informs your prospective employer about your ambitions, personal skills, qualities, summary of experiences, and career goals. Keep it within five lines and ensure it is tailored to the job you are applying for. Avoid generic clichés like "excellent communication skills" or "works well with others." Instead, be punchy and relate these attributes to the specific role.

"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door."–Milton Berle.

Tip #3 - Achievements

Including your achievements is an effective way to make your CV stand out. Research shows that candidates who highlight their accomplishments are more likely to be shortlisted for interviews. You can showcase outstanding exam marks, awards, leadership certificates, completion of important projects, or any other achievements that show your competence. Use short sentences or bullet points to convey these accomplishments and ensure their relevance.

Tip #4 - Education

The summary of your educational background is a fundamental part of your CV. Start with your most recent education and work backward. Dedicate a reasonable amount of space to your tertiary education, unless your basic education is the highest level you've completed. Mention any special modules or subjects you have taken and passed, and include the dates of your study period.

Tip #5 - Employment

Employment history holds great importance in your CV, as it shows your experience and competency. If you haven't had prior work experience, you can include industrial placements, voluntary positions, or internships in the employment section. This shows your willingness to work, even without a salary, which can be appealing to employers. While some may list previous permanent job positions and impressive titles, your weekend job can also work in your favor.

Tip #6 - Skills

Highlight your relevant abilities and expertise, acquired either through your qualification or during your studies. These skills should closely align with the role you are applying for. IT skills, numerical skills, writing skills, and analytical skills are just a few examples of what you can include in your CV.

Tip #7 - Hobbies & Interest

Including a hobbies and interests section is optional. It allows you to showcase your personal interests outside of work. Some interviewers may ask about your hobbies, so it's helpful to include this section. However, you have the choice to omit it if you prefer.

Tip #8 - References

References are a crucial part of your CV, particularly if you have prior work experience. This section should be the last part of your CV. Provide a maximum of two reachable references–individuals who can vouch for your work ethic. Include their full names, titles/positions, work addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses. Always seek permission from your references before including their details, or you can simply state that references are available upon request.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a clear and professional CV leaves a positive impression on prospective employers. By following these guidelines, you can create an effective CV that increases your chances of securing the job you desire.
